Dr Mariam Almahdi’s family protest outside NISS HQ demanding for her release

National Umma Party’s Deputy Leader, Dr Mariam Almahdi was detained by Sudan’s Security Forces (NISS), from 11 August 2014.Since then nor her family members or her lawyer were permitted to see her, apart from her husband who was alowed to see her briefly last week in Omdurman prison. NO CHARGE had been made yet. Her arrest is both unjust and unlawful. Her family had protested outside NISS Headquarters today demanding for her immediate release.

It is a well known fact that Dr. Mariam Almahdi had participated in the meetings that brought about the signing of the Paris Declaration between the National Umma Party and the Sudanese Revolutionary Front on the 8th of August 2014. The agreement called for uniting all opposition to the government, both civilian and military inorder to bring about a stop to the ongoing war in Sudan and to secure aid to those who have been affected by it. It also called for the freedom of speech, freedom to all political detainees to be released and for Human Rights. The agreement also called for the need for everybody concerned about the welfare of the Sudan to discuss a way of salvaging the country from doom. Without excluding anyone to bringing about a just and comprehensive peace and democratic transformation to the country.

This is the background leading to Dr Mariam Almahdi’s unjust and unfair arrest. Wide condemnations both in Sudan and international have been made, but Sudan’s government has not released her yet. Her unlawful detention is against Human Rights.
