Subject: demanding an end to the unjust imprisonment and revenge towards Dr Mariam Alsadig Almahdi

We Dr Mariam Alsadig Almahdi’s family are worried to the uttermost about her, for we were at her arrival reception at the airport with members of the National Umma Party and the Ansar last Monday evening on the 11th of August, but she didn’t come out with the rest of the passengers, then we learned from officials working at the airport that members of the security forces took her from the steps of the plane, and since then we did not know where she is for certain. Although we have heard that they had taken her to the Political Security building in Bahari, and from there to a building belonging to your enforcement in Omdurman prison. Throughout this period, we were not allowed to visit her nor talk to her to ensure that she is alright, or whether she needed anything, and every time your officials told us that visits are not allowed until after the interrogation has completed, which we were told has not yet begun. This means that her current detention is just mere revenge for no inquiry has yet been made, nor has her simplest rights of seeing her lawyer been provided and we as her family members, we were deprived of our simplest rights by visiting her and being reassured that she is alright.

This detention, which is coming up to a week now, is a violation of human rights charters included in the transitional Constitution of 2005, which coupled with threats and intimidations in the media from government officials, booing some of her political efforts, including her role in the conclusion of the Paris Declaration, which the Umma Party signed with the Sudan Revolutionary Front. In addition to this we heard your office has issued an official direction to newspapers preventing them from reflecting and exposing the Declaration positively, which will cast as trying to place solicitation against her. All of which increases our concern on Dr Mariam’s doomed situation, and we reject these violations which she is subjected to and we demand that you release her immediately.

We do not know why you have detained her, but if it relates to what government officials are saying in the media in convicting the Paris Declaration, whatever the different views surrounding the declaration are, it remains within differing political interpretations, and no reasonable mind sees it amounting to a crime or becoming an accusation material. what was signed in the declaration is consistent with what was announced by her and her Party for years, and according to this the Umma Party had signed charters with the government at the highest levels like the Compromise Agreement in May 2008 AD, and the Mulazmeen Meeting in August 2013 AD, but if the security forces have any questions or accusations surrounding this, we demand that she is dealt with fairly and in completing the enquiries as soon as possible and directing charges towards her, and permitting us to see her, and permitting her to see her lawyer immediately. As this detention is unfair, retaliatory and vindictive by which she was denied her simplest rights, we do not know any reason for it and we refuse to accept it and demand that you end it and release her immediately. We will challenge this and work to oppose it using all means of civil disobedience.

God is great and to God we thank

The family of Dr Mariam Alsadig Almahdi
