Arab Coalition for Sudan condemns the arrest of D. Maryam Sadiq Al-Mahdi, the Vice President of the Umma National Party (opposition), by Sudan’s security authorities, after returning at dawn from France last Monday. The government utilized the signing of “Paris declaration” between the Umma National Party (UNP) and the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) to arrest her last week.

The arrest of D. Maryam, is affront violation of human rights covenants and Sudan’s constitution, it is unjustified action that disregards any evidence. Nevertheless, if the government is trying to make the dialogue between the UNP and the armed SRF, which resulted in “Paris Declaration” as a pretext to arrest D. mariam, the Government itself has already sat for dialogue and negotiation with the armed SRF in more than one platform… so why they arrest her now?

ACS condemns the arrest of D. mariam, and calls the authorities to release her promptly; and also call for the release of all other political detainees that are languishing in prisons without having committed any offense.

ACS calls on all regional and international human rights organizations, to put pressure on the regime to release all detainees and to allow public freedoms and freedom of opinion and expression without restrictions or conditions for all political parties and entities, so as to exercise their constitutional rights, carry out their activities and to express their positions.
